Root cause of the red build on #41: the workflow cloned with --depth 1 (shallow clone of the default branch) and then checked out $GITHUB_SHA. For branch pushes the SHA is not in the default-branch clone, so checkout died with 'fatal: unable to read tree (262f8c1...)' exit 128. Fix: fetch the pushed SHA explicitly and check out FETCH_HEAD. Verified locally: go vet and go test pass on the branch. This must land before PR #41 can go green.
